RETURN TO PARTY

M.P. Who Left Over Suez

(N.Z Press Association—Copyright > (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, December 19.

The last of the Conservative members who left the party’s ranks in the House of Commons over aspects of the Government’s policy over Suez, has returned to the fold, London newspapers reported today. He is Colonel Cyril Banks, who left the party in protest against the British-French intervention at Suez and has since sat in the House as an independent. He is a friend of President Nasser of Egypt and made several visits to Egypt after Suez to try to improve British-Egyptian relations.

In May, 1957, eight members resigned from the Conservative Party in protest against the Government’s subsequent “capitulation to Nasser.’* These members of the “Suez group,” like Colonel Banks, have now either left politics or rejoined the Conservative ranks in the House of Commons.
