Lawn Tennis CANTERBURY TITLES

R. N. Howe An j Entry The Australian lawn tennis player, R. N. Howe, who will defend his New Zealand singles and doubles titles at the national championships at Wilding Park from January 3 to 10, will also take part in the Canterbury provincial championships, beginning on January 25. This was confirmed by the secretary of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association (Mr G. F. Sheppard) yesterday. Mr Sheppard said that it was also likely that Howe would be playing in the South Canterbury titles between the Canterbury and New Zealand championships. Howe’s last appearance at Wilding Park was with the British! Davis Cup players, M. Davies and W. Knight, in exhibition matches! after the national championships at Auckland in January, 1957. Howe, who comes from Armidale, New South Wales, is one of the most widely-travelled of Australian tennis players and a great deal of his experience has been in Europe. He is also one of the few noted “two-handed” players. Australian Tours Tourney Winners (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 10. Winners of future B.P. tennis tournaments in New Zealand will have the opportunity of taking part in certain competition tennis in Australia, according to the managing director of the sponsoring company, Mr L. G. Hucks. "My company has decided to meet the costs of sending the winners to Australia, provided they are eligible for the tournaments selected," he said.
