RACING Start Of Liban’s Northern Campaign

A sound run by Liban in the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday will heighten interest in the Gore horse’s attempt to win the Auckland Cup on January

Liban is one of several Auckland Cup entrants in the Te Awamutu Cup field.

He has 8-9 and will be giving weight to all but one of his opponents in a capacity field. But if he can handle the righthanded course competently he should put up a good show. Laban has 8-7 in the Auckland Cup. He has had a steady preparation for his first major staying test and if he comes through it to the satisfaction of his trainer, E. A. Winsloe, he' will be a solid opponent for the best of the northern horses. True Bridge, one of Liban’s opponents in the Te Awaumutu Cup,, has already been placed in the race twice. Last year True Bridge ran second to Rebellious in the Te Awamutu Cup, then ran third behind Red Eagle and Passive in the Auckland Cup. True Bridge was one of the long shots and paid £25 17s for a place in the Auckland Cup. A year earlier True Bridge was third in the Te Awamutu Cup. True Bridge did not run in the Auckland Cup that season, but the Te Awamutu Cup was still to prove of considerable value. Yeman, winner of the Auckland Cup that season, had finished fourth at Te Awamutu. . Straight Lead was runner-up in both races. Back To Form Royal Chant was one of the most impressive winners at the Beaumont meeting last Saturday. He was having his first race since the Shorts Handicap at Trentham in October. He was unplaced in that race, failing to show any dash after an unsettling trip north. He was brought to Riccarton last month for the New Zealand Cup meeting but could not race because of a poisoned foot. In 12 months Royal Chant has fashioned a bright record. He recorded his first win in open class when he narrowly beat Pack Drill in the Squatters’ Handicap at Orari in September, and at his next start he beat a fairly strong field of sprinters at the Dunedin spring meeting. No Interest At Sales In spite of her solid breeding, prospective buyers at the National yearling sales at Trentham in January failed to take any interest in a brown filly by Oman from Marie. Her Matangi breeder, Mr A. Meier, retained her and named her Bella Paola, after the Epsom Oaks winner. On Saturday she had her first win for him, after being three times second and once third from five other starts. Bella Paola numbers among her relatives the New Zealand and Great Northern Oaks winner. Belle Cane, dam of two stakes winners in America and grandam of a Nasrullah colt which was sold for 80,000 dollars, then a record price for a yearling. Cover Up, winner of the 100,000-dollar Hollywood Gold Cup, and Admiral Drake, winner of the 1931 Auckland Cup. Bella Paola also claims a distant relationship with the Wingatui galloper, Ark Royal. Her dam, Marie, is by Red Mars from Tukumaitu, by Theio from Duck’s Egg, by Absurd from the imported mare, Tame Duck. Tame Dnck was brought from England in 1915 by Mr F. Armstrong, a well-known breeder. Several good winning families have

been founded by horses owned or bred by Mr Armstrong, and Tame Duck’s has been one of the most successful. In New Zealand it has produced a dual Oaks winner, and winners of the Auckland Cup, Great Northern Derby and A. R. C. Easter Handicap. Cover Up, an American-bred grandson of Tame Duck, won the Hollywood Gold Cup in American record time. Tame Duck herself produced five winners for Mr Armstrong. Her third foal was Admiral Drake, winner of the Auckland Cup and Wellington Handicap, and second in the New Zealand Cup. Her 1934 foal was Francis Drake, winner of the A.R.C. Great Northern St Leger, Easter Handicap, and Welcome Stakes, and the W.R.C. Welcome Stakes. Another of Tame Duck’s foals was Duckling, the third dam of Ark Royal, which was third in the New Zealand Cup last month. Ark Royal won the Canterbury Cup and Great Autumn as a three-year-old, and at Flemington two years ago he figured in a triple dead heat with Pandie Sun and Fighting Force in the Hotham Handicap. To date Bella Paola has had six starts. On Saturday she beat two other well-bred youngsters— Aroha and Gay Diana—in the Tuakau Stakes at Franklin. Aroha is by Knight’s Romance from Surah, an unraced half-sister to the Auckland Cup winner, Tesla. Gay Diana, which was bred at the Trelawney Lodge Stud, is distantly related to Redcraze. Bella Paola’s five other starts have produced three seconds and a third. One of the seconds was to Yahabeebee’s half-sister, Taj Beebe, in the Kindergarten Plate at Avondale
