INDUSTRIES FOR SOUTH ISLAND

Proposal To City Council The encouragement of big industrial users of power to Christchurch will be proposed to the next meeting of the City Council. Cr. M. A. Connelly, M.P., gave notice to the council last evening that he would move that the council take immediate steps to bring down a programme and policy designed to encourage industrial consumers of power—whether as a raw material or otherwise—in particular heavy industrial plants such as iron and steel, aluminium, carbide, electrochemical and electro-thermal, to establish themselves in Christchurch or the surrounding area, “to take advantage of the Government’s policy of making power available for industry in the South Island.”

• Cr.’ Connelly’s motion adds that the council should confer with and seek the co-operation of power supply authorities and other local bodies in the Canterbury area.
