TV Makes For "Dead Cities” (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Nov. 26 Because of television .London suburban centres were “cities of the dead” in the evening, said Mr Brian Harbour, a London Transport official, explaining reasons for the withdrawal of 34 bus routes and changes in many othe:s.
Between 1950 and early this year, he said, bus and trolley-bus passengers dropped by 21 per cent, equal to 700 million passengers a year.
In the same period vehicles in the London Transport area more than doubled—from 646,000 to 1,300,000.
Television kept millions at home in the evenings.
