YOUTHS SENT TO GAOL
Attack Made On Immigrant
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. November 21. The Court did not believe borstal as suitable a penalty as a prison term in this case, said Mr J S. Hanna. S.M.. in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington today, when two youths and a girl appeared for sentence after being convicted last week of assault with intent to rob. Police evidence was that the girl, Elaine Iris Hewitt, aged 18. pantrymaid, had been used as a decoy to lure a young immigrant, George McNabb, to an area where he was attacked with a knife and stabbed in the back of the head by Pene Mua Whakataka, aged 20. workman, with the assistance of Francis James Hae Hae, aged 19. workman. They intended to rob him but failed. The Magistrate said this was a serious charge and in view of the past history of the two youths a prison term was the only suitable penalty The girl’s conduct had been disgraceful but not so serious, he said. Both youths were sent to prison for 18 months and the girl was admitted to probation for three years and ordered to abstain from drinking intoxicating liquor. 1
