Donald e Richard Comes, a seaman, was ; remanded to November 27 on bail tJ of £lOO. and one surety of £lOO, J pending the outcome of his applin I cation to stay in New Zealand, r He was ordered to report daily ■ to the police. J, Cornes had deserted a ship in ■March this year, and had been 1 sentenced at Timaru on July 23 s | to two months’ imprisonment, said 7 i Sergeant E. S. Tuck. On Septemt j ber 27, he appeared before Mr 1 j Raymond Ferner. S.M.. in Christi church, and was further detained . for two months, pending deportation. The detention has now expired. Cornes was now seeking bail pending the outcome of an application to remain in New Zealand. Sergeant Tuck said. Mr S. H. Wood, for the Blue Star Shipping Line. Ltd., said that the ship Wellington Star was available to Cornes to sail on next week, or, failing that, the Tasman Star was available in midDecember. DROVE WITHOUT CARE Colin James Myall was fined j £4 for driving without due care I and attention in Annex road, Riccarton, on August 29. The Court was told by Senior-Sergeant J. B. McLean that Myall was driving a light truck when he struck the pedal of a bicycle ridden by a 12-year-old schoolboy, Oliver John Hollis, throwing the boy to the ground. Mr J. G. Leggat, for Myall, said the boy had “veered, swerved, or wobbled” just as Myall’s truck was passing his cycle. “The boy changed his course so as to bring himself on to the bitumen. Convicting Myall, the Magistrate said: “I do not think it is a bad case at all and the defendant behaved very properly after the accident.” He said it appeared the boy did not move out far from the side of the road. It seemed that Myall had failed in his duty to allow a sufficient clearance. (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.)
