“HOUSIE-HOUSIE” ILLEGAL
‘Warning’ Prosecutions In Auckland
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. November 21.
As a warning that “housiehousie” is illegal, the Auckland police today prosecuted three persons who separately admitted responsibility for the conduct of the game in different city halls. The defendants admitted playing a game of chance, and each was discharged without conviction under Section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act. by Mr W. S. Spence, S.M., on payment of 30s costs. Acceding to requests for suppression of names, the Magistrate said: “I understand the game is essentially a fair one. and if it is not the first prosecution of its kind in New Zealand, then I don’t know of a precedent. “The proceedings will serve as a warning to the public that this must stop, and any future offenders cannot take it for granted they will be dealt with in the same way.”
