China

Sir, —P. J. Alley obviously! favours the methods of material-1 istic ideology. Using the democratic privileges of free speech he put forward upsupported charges against Mr Dulles. There he is a faulted, since in a free country t no-one can be condemned without r a fair trial. Under despotism. t however, it is only necessary toj c “give a dog a bad name and hang it him.” or liquidate him by a faster • t method. Mr Dulles’s policy may ( not be perfect but his aim has , been to save the free nations to s the best of his ability. One point he has proved: China, under the j present regime, is not fit to enter the United Nations. She has { affronted the principles of the ‘ organisation by resorting to vio- J lence in the Formosa area.—Yours. ‘ etc., T. E. SHAW 1 Westport, November 20. 1958. J <

Sir. —“Fait Accompli” mentions 1 Tibet. Tibet has been part of China for a long historical past, and it was only recently separated from China by the efforts of colonialism, which now is losing its effect on the peoples of the world. That is, except for a few troubled spots such as Cyprus anti Africa, but liberation must soon come.—Yours, etc., P. J. ALLEY, . November 21. 1958.

Sir.—l think Mr Walter Nash did a fine bit of diplomacy in suggesting that Matsu and Quemoy should be returned to the Chinese mainland administration. We all remember that the Tachen islands were evacuated by Chiang Kaishek in 1955 and there has been no friction since. We must not forget that China has declared for a 12-mile limit of her coastal waters. This will cause Britain to watch the position closely ; because Hong Kong comes within the 12 miles. Fortunately, relations between Hong Kong and Communist China are harmonious and friendly, which indicates sensible public relations. If Mr Nash’s suggestion that Formosa be demilitarised and if Chiang Kaishek and his million refugees on Formosa devoted themselves to general progress, all frictions ! should disappear.—Yours, etc.. RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, November 20. 1958.

Sir,—Mr P. J. Alley 1 is convinced that anything said by Dulles is contrary to fact. No doubt the Communist dictators will support his assertion. We have other means of knowing, with all due respect to Mr Alley, the Communists deny freedom of thought and speech and kill off their political opponents. Under the democracies we have freedom and Dulles wishes to keep things that way. Mr Alley, as an exponent of truth, might be accepted as such were he to tell us why he condones the liquidation of the residents of Communist States and their satellites. There is no “agreeing to differ’’ as far as a Communist is concerned: everything must be as he dictates, or else. Mr Alley not only has his opinion of Dulles, but can also tell what the Americans think. Somewhat presumptuous’ —Yours, etc., HIRAM HUNTER. November 21. 1958.
