Americans At Harewood

Sir, —Your editorial mentions the possible advantages to some sections of the Christchurch business community which may result from the establishment of an American Navy and Air Force base at Harewood. The social, military, and political implications of an American military base on the outskirts of one of New Zealand’s largest cities should also be taken into consideration. New Zealand’s independence is priceless, and we would certainly lose our freedom of action in international affairs if we were ever foolish enough to allow any foreign Power —however friendly —to establish a permanent military base in this country.—Yours, etc., F.C. November 19, 1958.
