Baking Classes At The Show

Sir, —Competitors at the show hear some weird and wonderful remarks. “It beats me how they get the sponges so white,” said one woman. “Oh,” replied her companion, “they never put the yolks into show sponges; that’s the secret.’* Moving along to the pikelets that had stood for three hot days came this gem. “I don’t think much of those. You make better ones yourself.” So many of these lookers-on were heard to remark after seeing exhibits. “Huh. I could do better myself.’’ To these people I say. “Come on, then, prove it next show time.’’ We are told the entries in the baking section are diminishing yearly, so here is a chance for the critics to build it up again.—Yours, etc., A PRIZE-WINNER. November 19. 1958.

Far East Fleet Regatta.— The New Zealand frigate, H.M.N.Z.S. Rotoiti came second in the Far East Fleet regatta at Hong Kong. With 120 points, the Rotoiti was only one point behind the winners. the Royal Navy frigate Cossack. Taking part in the regatta were ships from the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy as well as the Rotoiti. Boats from Rotoiti won four of the nine races they entered.—(P.A.)
