DOCTOR FINED £450
False Returns Of Income I New Zealana Prese Association) INVERCARGILL. November 19. William Barnett Reekie, a medical practitioner, who has been in practice at Otautau for 25 years, was fined a total of £450 in the Magistrate's Court at Invercargill today on six charges of .understating, his refees amounting to £lB IDs. Prosecuting ror the Department of Inland Revenue, Mr J. R. Mills said the total discrepancy between the returned incomes and incomes assessed had resulted in a deficient tax of approximately £5OOO, which included Social Security charge. For Reekie, Mr C. M. B. French said that the tax assessed had now been paid. A feature of Reekie’s affairs was that accounts had never been sent out to patients, except in the case of deceased estates, for the last 10 years. In imposing sentence, Mr G. A. Nicholls, S.M., said Reekie himself was to blame. He had not kept any record of cash payments and had the investigation not been made the department would have been short by the large amount mentioned. He imposed a fine of £75 on each of the six charges.
