BASKING SHARK CAPTURED

Rare Fish In N.Z. Waters “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, November 19. A basking shark, rarely found in New Zealand waters, has been sent to the Dominion Museum. The museum’s ichthyologist (Mr J. M. Moreland) said that the shark was fairly rare in New Zealand waters, only 12 having been reported since the European settlement of this country. The basking shark was speared by a fisherman who saw it swimming near the New Plymouth wharves a fortnight ago and was sent to the museum by the Marine Department at New Plymouth, deep frozen, and packed in sacking. The shark is 9ft long, weighs 1341 b, and is one of a cosmopolitan species that grows up to 40ft in length. It is unusual in that it has a deformed snout which gives it the appearance of having a pig’s nose.
