FREIGHTER IN TOW

The Navy frigate Kaniere, with the Holm Line freighter Port Waikato in tow, was last evening reported to be due at Lyttelton at about 7.30 a.m. on Thursday. The Kaniere left port at 1 p.m. on Monday and reached the disabled Port Waikato 225 miles east of Banks Peninsula at 2 o’clock yesterday morning Because of heavy sea the frigate was not able to put a line over to the freighter until 7 a.m. The Kaniere. commanded by Lieutenant-Commander D. H.

O’Donoghue, was reported to be making six knots with its tow. The maximum speed of the frigate is 19.5 knots. Mr H. Herdman, manager of the Lyttelton branch of Holm and [Company, agents for the Port Waikato, said yesterday afternoon that the 1600 sheep the ship was carrying were reported to be in I good condition.
