November 12. : Dr. Barnes Wallis, the man who I invented the "bouncing bombs” used by the “Dambusters?’ slipped into New York today with a party' 'of fellow scientists to negotiate f<.r combined Anglo-American re-1 ! search on his revolutionary “Swal-I I low Wing’’ supersonic aircraft. , design. ; ' The party flow into New York ifrom London early this morning, 'but avoided reporters. British Overseas Airways Corporation ofiicials for several hours professed no knowledge of the party’s arrival, but later confirmed they had reached New York. They explained that they had orders to allow "no publicity.” American scientists tonight expressed keen interest in the •‘Swallow’ design. The 71-year-old Dr. Wallis, accompanied by four scientists and two Ministry of Supply ofiicials. arrived this evening at Hampton. Virginia. At Langley Field, near Hampton. Dr. Wallis and his party are to confer in the next few days with American scientists on technical problems associated with the design. The newly-formed National Aeronautics and Space Administration maintains a wind tunnel and other facilities at Langley Field. Mr John Stack, assistant director of the N.A.S.A. laboratory at Langley Field, said tonight: *1 have made three trips to England this year and I have seen the designs. “I think they have got something. If we didn’t think so we wouldn’t be looking at it.” Mr Stack said, however, that the folding wing concept was not a new idea in the United States, where it was known as the variable sweep aircraft.
