INSECTICIDE AIRLIFT
Aphid Outbreak In Manaivatu To counteract a serious outbreak of aphid trouble in the Manawatu area, which could threaten the whole of the North Island, 260 gallons of a special insecticide will be loaded in a specially-chartered Bristol Freighter at Harewood today and taken to Palmerston North. The systematic insecticide is provided by a New Zealand firm whose Christchurch branch was able to arrange its urgent dispatch to a Palmerston North mercantile seed firm which will distribute it to farmers and aerial spraying contractors. The request for the insecticide was received by the Christchurch branch of the firm yesterday afternoon and the quantity is sufficient to cover 2600 acres.
“Immediate application will be necessary to counteract substantial damage by the aphid to wheat crops in that area,” said Mr R. S. McKenzie, representing the Christchurch branch of the firm. He said it was believed to be the first occasion that such a quantity of insecticide had been carried by air in New Zealand.
