PROXIMITY OF LEVERS

“No Similarity In Appearance” (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 13. The National Airways Corporation sees no danger in the proximity of certain levers in the controls of the Viscount. Atkcd by the aviation correspondent of the ”Dominion” if a double-locking device was possible so the under-carriage could not be retracted by mistake, an N A.C. spoils in ah said today that there was already such a device which operated when the plane s speed became less than 85 m.p h.

To extend this absolute lock to speeds.. higher than 85 m.p h might *be dangerous. If a pilot wanted to “do an overshoot” because of late-landing or some obstruction ahead, he would not be able to' get his wheels up and out of the way. It was not known what speed the Viscount was travelling at when the undercarriage was retracted in error at Auckland. It must have been in excess of 85 m.p.h., or the undercarriage would not have responded to the co-pilot. The levers controlling the flaps and undercarriage were about 6in apart. They were not similar in appearance, said the spokesman.
