ACCOMMODATION FOR STUDENTS
“Serious Problem” In Wellington (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 3. Accommodation for students was a serious problem, which would steadily worsen in the next few years, Mr D. B. Wilson, president of the Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association, told Wellington Rotarians at their luncheon today. Of 1000 students who came from outside Wellington to Victoria this year only 181 could be accommodated in university hostels The rest had to find suitable private accommodation. There were 789 new students at Victoria this year, and more than 360 had to find accommodation. This number was increasing every year. Yet hostel life was one of the most important parts of university life. The university could educate in a narrow academic field, but the hostel created the atmosphere which promoted broader discussion. “Wellington should be proud of its university rather than regard it as a necessary evil of youth,” Mr Wilson said. “It belongs to the community.- It is, after all, the university of Wellington.”
