NAMATJIRA’S SENTENCE

“Broken Man” After Gaol (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, November 3. The Australian artist, Albert Namatjira, was a “broken man” after his recent stay in Alice Springs gaol, a Melbourne aboriginal clergyman, Pastor Doug Nicholls, said today. “I think the court case and the time in gaol broke his heart,” Pastor Nicholls said. “He feels that the people of Alice Springs have let him down.” Pastor Nicholls has just returned from a trip to Alice Springs, where he visited Namatjira. Namatjira was sentenced to six months’ gaol on October 7 for supplying liquor to a native. He was released on October 10 after notice of appeal to the Supreme Court had been lodged.
