SMUGGLING OF PARROTS

Galahs Found In Auckland (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 26. Seamen are believed to be smuggling Australian parrots into New Zealand and selling them, according to a Department of Agriculture official in Auckland today. All parrots are prohibited from importation here under the Animal Importation Act, but recently six young galah parrots were destroyed after being found m a seaman’s cabin on a ship, and two days later three more birds were found at the home of a seaman in Auckland. This man had evidently been trying to sell them, and furthei evidence showed that parrot peddling was obvious in Auckland. Anyone seeing anyone trying to sell a parrot should be immediately suspicious, the official warned. “They are entirely prohibited, and apart from those in zoos none has been imported for many years —in fact, the private parrot population is dying out. “The greatest danger in purchasing parrots is . that psittacosis, the infamous disease may be contracted.”
