SUMNER BOAT HARBOUR
Breakwater Work Begun Work has begun on rebuilding and extending the breakwater at Sumner Bay in preparation for the moving of the Sumner lifeboat from its present site near Shag Rock to Scarborough. Rock for the breakwater is bein taken to Sumner from the City Council’s McCormacks Bay quarry. The work will take several months. In addition to rebuilding the breakwater, excavation of the basin will be made so there will be sufficient depth for the lifeboat to manoeuvre at any time. The cost of reconstruction of the lifeboat facilities has been estimated by the council at £lO,OOO, and the Government has undertaken to provide a subsidy of £1 for £2. Efforts have been made by the Sumner Residents’ Association and the council to have the Government subsidy, which was approved by the National Government, increased.
