SMOKERS REDUCE CONSUMPTION

Drop Of One-Third In Auckland (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 25. Smokers have cut their consumption of cigarettes and tobacco by one-third since the price went up following increased duties announced in the Budget, Auckland tobacconists and hairdressers say. “It is reasonable to assume that stocks bought by smokers immediately following the Budget are now exhausted, but the quantity turnover of retailers is only two-thirds of that before the Budget,” says a statement by the executive of the Auckland District Retail Tobacconists’ and Hairdressers’ Association. The executive decided yesterday to ask the New Zealand Federation of Retail Tobacconists and Hairdressers to approach the Price Tribunal for an adjustment of retail percentage margins.
