SCHOOLS’ SENIOR INSPECTOR
Appointment For Mr H. Findlay Mr Hugh Findlay has been appointed senior inspector of schools, Christchurch, on the promotion of Mr L. J. Broomfield for this position to district senior inspector for Canterbury and Westland. Mr Findlay is particularly well known in Christchurch for his keen interest in music and his direction of early primary schools’ music festivals. Educated at the Christchurch West and Boys’ High Schools, Mr Findlay trained at the Christchurch Teachers’ College, graduated from the University of Canterbury, and also won a diploma in education. He served as an assistant master and music specialist at the Linwood North School from 1930 to 1942 (with a brief period at Phillipstown) and then at Christchurch South and Shirley Intermediate Schools for about five years. He had just transferred to the Woolston School when he was appointed to the inspectorate in 1949.* After service in Auckland and Otago, Mr Findlay returned to Christchurch as an inspector about five years ago. Another well-known inspector, Mr R. L. McNabb, retired yesterday. He also has been on the inspectorate since 1949. Mr McNabb was born in Karamea and taught in Wellington, Southland, Taranaki, and Auckland, and had a year’s exchange teaching in Adelaide. He was one of the early organisers of school visits to other centres for social studies. He has wide sporting and community interests.
