Simple Changeover At Papanui
He expected no difficulty in the distribution of textbooks under the new free book scheme next year, said the principal of „he Papanui High School (Mr L. B. Newton) reporting to the monthly meeting of the school’s board of governors yesterday. The school had considerable experience in the distribution of textbooks in the past. It was one of the few schools in New Zealand which supplied books to pupils on a credit basis, allowing parents six months to pay accounts.
About 80 to 90 per cent, of the pupils were supplied with books in this way so that there would be no difficulty with the changeover to free books, said Mr Newton.
There was, however, some concern about the scheme once the
‘Tm not so happy about the extra work that will fall on the shoulders of the staff in getting books from pupils who leave, checking on books lost, and assessing responsibility for books damaged,” said Mr Newton.
Technical Conference. The Technical Education Association will hold its 1959 conference at Timaru, it was decided at the annual conference which ended in Wellington yesterday.—(P.A.)
