POLIO LIST TO CLOSE
12,000 Consents Received Applications by parents to have their infants inoculated against poliomyelitis should be made wthin the next week, the Health Department advised yesterday. Vaccinations will begin about mid-October for the two to five years age group. “If applications are not made in the next week the lists will probably be closed so arrangements can be made for the vaccinations later,” a spokesman for the department said. An estimated 16,000 children in Canterbury are eligible for the vaccinations in the infant age group. In Christchurch, the department’s district office has received 12,000 consent notices. Parents will be notified individually of the date and time for their children to be vaccinated. Vaccinations will be done at primary schools in the area people live in. Six teams, and on some days seven teams, of vaccination groups will spend about a month vaccinating the infants. Each team will comprise a doctor, one or two nurses and a clerk. Adolescents are generally vaccinated as they file past in a steady-moving queue but with infants 1t is expected that more time will have to be taken talking to parents and pacifying timid patients.
