Basketball Successes
The West Old Girls’ Basketball Club had an outstanding record this season. The A team was joint runnerup in the senior grade, the B team won the senior reserve grade, and will play St. Nicholas next year in a relegation and promotion match for senior grading. The B team also won the Beau Ideal Cup for the highest goal average in the senior grade, with 35 goals. Coleen McMasters and Jean have bee i the main goal shooters for the team. The C team won the second grade and the L team won the sixth grade. Technical By winning the senior championship by 10 points, the Technical basketball senior team created a new record. The last time Technical won the championship was in 1952 with Digbys. Jean Fuller, Shirley Fisher, Marina Fisher, and Gay Berrill gained South Island honours and, with Ann Blair were members of the Canterbury team. A feature of the team’s play was the excellent team work and the great goal shooting of Pat Dorward, especially in the second round when the new rules were played.
