MOTORWAY BEYOND WAIMAKARIRI

Kaiapoi Council’s Objections

The Kaiapoi Borough Council does not believe there is any justification for a motorway north of the Waitnakariri. The Mayor (Mr C. T. Williams) said last evening that once traffic crossed the river it was no longer a heavy, steady, through stream. It was diffused by motorists going off in all. directions. This type of traffic was best served by ordinary roads with full rights of access. Mr Williams said. A motorway north of the river would not only be expensive; it would not be as useful as an ordinary road. The council also considered there was need for much more investigation into the site of any new traffic bridge. The Minister of Works (Mr Watt) would visit Kaiapoi after Parliament ended ,to discuss these issues with the council
