Cricket May Confident For Tour
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Sept. 20.
Peter May, the England cricket captain, voiced his confidence in the M.C.C. team before they left St. Pancras Station, London, today on their way to embark on the s.s. Iberia for the voyage to Australia. “I am greatly looking forward to the tour, and I believe we have a very good side indeed,” May said. ‘‘The real strength probably lies in the experience of our bowlers and their consistennt accuracy, but I believe that our fielding, led by Lock, Milton, Cowdrey and Trueman, will be outstanding.” With 16 cricketers under his command, May leads the smallest party to visit Australia since the war.
T. G. Evans will be making his fourth tour of Australia. It will be the third visit for T. E. Bailey and also for J. B. Statham, who flew out as a replacement for F. Brown’s team in 1950-51, and toured again under Sir Leonard Hutton four years ago. May, his vice-captain* C. Cowdrey, F. Tyson, J. Loader, and T. Graveney have each made one previous visit to Australia.
