YVONNE ARNAUD DEAD

Career On London Stage , (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, September 20. The French-born actress, Yvonne Arnaud died this morning in a London hosffital where she was operated on for cerebral trouble. Miss Arnaud, who was 85, collapsed with a cerebral hemorrhage on August 1 and had been in the National Hospital, Queen’s square, ever since. Miss Arnaud, one of the leading figures of the London stage, made her debut in “The Quaker Girl” at the Adelphi Theatre in 1911. It was said of Miss Arnaud that she symbolised the Englishman’s classic conception of the Frenchwoman—gay, and frivolous, and that in real life she was quick-witted, practical and intolerant of stupidity. She made her name in 1912 as Suzanne in "The Girl in the Taxi.”

She is survived by her husband, Mr Hugh McLellan, whom she married in 1920.
