Former President Declines
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) ALBANY (New York), Sept. 19. The Governor of New York, Mr Averell Harriman, last night proposed Mr Harry S. Truman, the former President, for the 1960 Democratic Presidential nomination.
Mr Truman has repeatedly said he would not be a candidate for public office again. He declined Mr Harriman’s “nomination” last night. The New York Governor, himself considered a possible candidate. said the former President would make an “outstanding party standard bearer.’’ The former President was given a standing ovation when Mr Harriman described him as “the man to get us back on the rails,’’ and added: “I therefore nominate, for the President of the United States, Harry S. Truman.” Truman rose to his feet, and, with a broad smile, said: “I guess I’ll have to say no to that nomination.”
