CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING

South Island Championships

(New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, Aug. 31. The 1958 South Island cross-coun-try Championship race, held at Centennial Park, Timaru. on Saturday, was won by a Christchurch runner, B. M. Mogridge. He covered the three miles and one-eighth course in 19min 21sec. Mogridge was also a member of the winning team, Christchurch A, which filled first, third, and fourth places. A notable scratching from the race was that of John Williams (Christchurch), the reigning national junior cross-country titleholder. On the advice of his brother and coach (Kerry Williams), he did not race. One»of the favourites for the race, J. D. Herrick (Timaru Anglican Chib), who was runner-up in the New Zealand championships, was forced to - retire because of cramp after leading the field for about one mile and a half. Results:—

B. M. Mogridge (Christchurch A), 19mih 21sec, 1; C. Taylor (Dunedin Anglican), 19min 36sec, 2; W. Kennedy (Christchurch A), 19mln 46sec, 3; J. T. Power (Christchurch A), 19min 50sec, 4; R. Ibbotson (Dunedin Anglican), 19min 51sec, 5; A. Evans (Technical, Christchurch), 20min Bsec, 6.

The teams’ race was won by Christchurch, With Dunedin Anglican second. , Temuka-Timaru Race In the annual 12-mlle TemukaTimaru road race, for senior grade runners, R. J. Stevens (Olympic!: Club, Christchurch), off Imin, set a record and gained fastest time when he covered the distance in 55min 20sec. Stevens cut 18sec from the time recorded last year by his teammate B. Curie. Second fastest time was gained by T. Marshall (North! Otago), off Imin 30sec, in 55min! 46sec. The scratch man, K. E. Williams (Christchurch), the present New Zealand senior cross-country champion, recorded third fastest time in 55min 58sec. ■ man (Christchurch) off 12min 30sec. His time was 65min 36*ee. K. Hartman (Leith, Dunedin) was second land C. Marsh (St. Kflda, Dunedin) ■waa third.
