Town Hall
Sir,—Mr W. G. V. Femie, back home from Geneva, tells us New Zealand is slipshod in thinking and action and that undeveloped countries have better public buildings, hotels and universities than this country. Central Christchurch has lamentably few buildings of any quality and—natural beauty aside—has been allowed to degenerate into a tawdry township. . This is one good reason why a town hall is so much needed. It would give dignity, be of great use and uplift the whole city. With Americans, Russians, Germans and Japanese constructing buildings of super-quality, we are falling far behind and, unless our langorous citizens, propping against old veranda posts and musing contendedly on the cheap bepostered facades across the way, wake up. we shall remain what we deseiwe to be—a real hick town.—Yours, etc., 4-MINUTE MILER. August 7, 1958.
