Totalisator Betting And Stakes

Sir. —The betting figures set for the past year make interesting reading: £2,567,425 was invested on and off course at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s 10 meetings and £1.688.843 at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s nine meetings. Yet the trotting club gives slightly more in stakes a race than does the racing club. —Yours, etc., WHYSO. August 4, 1958. [Mr F. T. H. Bell says: “Your correspondent has overstated- by more than £lOO,OOO the combined on and off-course totalisator investments at the Canterbury Joekey Club’s meetings during th£ past season. However, the minimum amount required to be given in stakes under the rules of, racing and trotting is based op on-course investments only. Stakes provided by the Canterbury Jockey Club exceed the minimum by over £25,000.]
