Estate Duties
Sir.—l read the leading article “Gobbling the/Seed Corn” and the statement of Mr C. D. A. George and Mr S. D. Reeves on the new estate duties with interest. But I disagree that the assets subject to duty are wholly due to industry and thrift. First, about half the value of land and house property is due to the inflationary effect of the repeal of the Land Sales Act. Second, a large part of the remaining value is made by community effort (roads, railways, etc.). Not a finger was turned nor a penny saved by the individual receiving that value.—Yours, etc., July 19, 1958. [Surely the owners of property contribute to this “commun-t ity effort” of roads, railways, etc., through rates and taxes on their land values and through taxes on their income and expenditure?—Ed., “The Press.”]
