WAIMAKARIRI RUNNING HIGH
River Up 7ft Yesterday
A flash flood in the Waimakariri river—the result of heavy rain at Arthur’s Pass on Saturday—reached its peak at the Waimakariri bridge about 3 p.m. yesterday when the river was about seven feet above its normal level. No flood damage had been reported last evening and little was expected, although there can be no certainty until the waters recede, said the chief engineer of the North Canterbury Catchment Board (Mr H. M. Reid).
In the 24-hour period from 8 a.m. on Saturday 8.25 inches of rain fell at Arthur’s Pass. The rain ceased on Saturday evening; yesterday was fine and there was little prospect of any change. Mr Reid said flood warnings were issued for the Waimakariri area yesterday morning. The~flood was noticeable from early in the morning. It will be two or three days before the river is back to its normal flow, said Mr Reid. Wellington Gale Gale-force winds of up to 60 miles an hour roared through Wellington on Saturday night and early yesterday, battering down fences and hedges, but causing no serious damage. Heavy rain accompanied the blustering northwesterly.—(P.A.)
