THREE PRISON ESCAPES

Man Chased Into Bush (New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, August 10. Within a few hours, three prison escapes were reported in the Wanganui district today. Just after 2 p.m., Teddy Haame Te Hori, held in custody at the Wanganui Prison, was exercising in the yard when he scaled an iron fence. He was chased by a prison warden, but escaped in the bush near the Wanganui gasworks. Constable H. T. Surgenor and his police dog Axel were taken to the scene, but were unable to follow the escaper as the wet weather threw the dog off the scent. A 1957 model car was stolen between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. and was later found at Horopito, where Constable R. Skerritt, of Raetihi, reported that he had chased Te Hori into the bush. A carload of police left Wanganui immediately, with the police dog. Other police had set up road blocks in and around the city. Between 6.15 p.m. and 7 p.m., the Waikune Prison authorities reported that two prisoners escaped. Detective-Sergeant C. D. Taylor, of Taihape, is the field officer in charge and police from surrounding districts and Wanganui are assisting in the search. The Waikune escapers are: Reginald Workman, aged 28, and Stanley Alfred Allen Macintosh, aged 22.
