NEW SCHOOL BUILDINGS

Education Board

Programme

Provided that materials affected by import restrictions can be procured locally, the Canterbury Education Board will be allowed to use its present standard plans* without modification for the next six months. As this will save immediate redesigning, the board intends to push ahead with all authorised projects as quickly as possible, said the chairman (Mr S, J. Irwin).

But, Mr Irwin emphasised, the board would have to prepare in anticipation of shortages of roofing iron and other imported materials to minimise any delay. The new primary schools at Avonhead road (Upper Riccarton,) Brookside terrace (Bryndwr). Tuckers road (Papanui) and Netherby (Ashburton) will all be put in hand as soon as details can be settled so that they can come within the “six month’s licence” and be ready (at least in part) early next year. Because of the time required to plan and complete the more elaborate classrooms, laboratory, and manual training rooms for the post-primary section of the proposed new Culverden District High School, it will not be possible to open this secondary department in February; but it will be ready the following year. No date has yet been given*for the start on the Kirkwood avenue Intermediate School. Extra Classrooms

Apart from these projects, the board’s building programme for the next year includes additional classrooms at Hilton, Aranui, Methven, Shirley Intermediate, Gilberthorpe and at Flemington, where the. present building will also be replaced. Classrooms will be replaced at Fendalton and Riccarton. Remodelling will be carried out at Jacob’s River, Somerfield, Weheka, Rokeby, Glpnroy (where the school will be moved to a new site) and to the Methven manual training centre. Assembly halls on the approved programme are those at present in the course of erection at St. Albans and Greymouth, but it is probable that other assembly hall subsidies would be made available where school committees have already raised their share and are ready to proceed Staff and administration accommodation is approved for Rangiora (at present proceeding) and Waiau.
