Americans Accept Challenge

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. August 10. An American cricket team has accepted a challenge from the Lord’s Taverners and will play them at the Royal Artillery Cricket Ground, Woolwich, on August 24—the date on which the British Army burned down the White House in the war of 1812 The prize will be a potful of Boston tea. In 1889 the Gentlemen of Philadelphia sent a team to England and beat the Gentleman of Hampshire by two runs. Mr Joseph W. Filliston, who is 96 and lives outside London, played in that match and will be present at the coming game. The Taverners, whose twelfth man is the Duke of Edinburgh, are to be recruited mainly from London’s film, stage, and radio circles. The Americans are commercial, diplomatic, and journalistic expatriates.
