Cricket CHELTENHAM MATCH

Gloucestershire 106; N.Z. 127 (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) CHELTENHAM, August 9. The New Zealand cricketers experienced one ot the worst wickets of me tour at Cheltenham College when they met Gloucestershire (third from the bottom of the county championship). Both teams were bowled out in two hours -and 25 minutes with the . New Zealanders taking a lead of 21 on the first- innings, and Gloucestershire losing two for 20 in the second innings. The college wicket is used only once a year for festival cricket, and early in the season it is watered and rolled hard. About 10 days ago it was heavily raked, with the result the ball spun easily. Gloucestershire won the toss and batted and was all out for 106. The New Zealanders made 127. But for a magnificent 53 in 55 minutes by Reid, the New Zealanders’ score would have been pretty thin. Miller made a useful 27, mainly off the county’s faster bowlers, and Alabaster stayed with Reid for a key stand of 36, and batted 40 minutes for a- valuable 12 not out. The New Zealanders* fielding in Gloucestershire’s first innings could have been better. Three catches were not held.

Only Reid was in his element, and it was a fine fighting innings. His defence was sound, and when he attacked he hit the ball well and truly, twice taking sixes off Cook, whose slow left-arm spin was a further reminder of how sadly the New Zealanders lack one of his kind in the team. He also hit six fours and was clean bowled attempting another big hit after reaching 53. Cave bowled steadily, and he was much assisted by the wicket and at one period he had five for 26. Moir also bowled well, but his record was somewhat spoiled when Brown hit out with more hope than science and scored 16 in one over. Hayes is suffering from a strained ankle, and he did not field when Gloucestershire began its second innings 30 minutes before the close of play. Scores:

Rain interfered with the match and only 40 minutes’ of play was possible before lunch on the final day. In spite of the rain, the wicket remained fast and lively, and Smith declared at 117 for three. Sutcliffe and Playle went In for the New Zealanders at 3.25 p.m. and scored briefly at a run a minute, but. with Sutcliffe going at 19 lbw, and Playle being caught and bowled at 24, the New Zealanders began to fall behind the clock, Harford and. Reid had a misunderstanding over a second run, and Harford was run out with 120 still needed./ The remainder of the match was largely batting practice. Reid’s 50 took 55 minutes with eight fours.
