Revolver’s Win In Sydenham Hurdles

Revolver did not jump evenly in the Sydenham Hurdles, at Riccarton on Saturday, but his galloping ability did much to give him victory—his second at the meeting.

He lost ground at the five-fur-long hurdle when leading with Calm Ruler, but in the long run to the last flight he came to the front again. He ran down the last flight, but responded generously when ridden out to beat the top-weight Arawana by a length. The favourite Bulla jumped the first hurdle badly and tailed the field through the straight for the first time.

Calm Ruler jumped the stand hurdle in the lead. and,.Revolver was close behind him. Revolver jumped that flight perfectly and drew alongside the Awapuni horse soon after. Dunray and Arawana trailed them to the nine c urlones, and Son. Rae moved forward to make a line of three in the next two furlongs. Calm Ruler outjumped Revolver at the five furlongs, but lost his lead to the Matangi horse on the home turn. Arawana was equal second there, and Dunray '»’as moving forward on the inner Bulla was coming into the picture with a long run from the back and Marau was also making ground. Revolver lost a little ground when he ran down the last hurdle, but shook off a challenge from Arawana for a length victory. Dunray was two lengths back ♦hird, and the weakening Calm Ruler was two lengths and a half away fourth Son Rae was fifth m a gap and Bulla was next, followed bv Lochgai”. He was in front two furlongs later and Scotch Emblem went forward ‘to follow him past the half mile Ped Admiral had reached the end of his run and Saunter was third alongside Water Mill, with Sarabah next. Sarabah passed Water Mill anri Saunter going to the last flight, and kept up a strong run to master Scotch Emblem, but he did not trouble Solepic. Saunter was a fair fourth, a length and a half behind Scotch Emblem Water Mill was five lengths back fifth and was clear of Everv Night and Pitlochry. Next were Column. Horatius, Le Roi. Champion. Ballast. Red Admiral, and Hay Time Favourite’s Decisive Win The favourite. Count Pierre, carried top weight of 9-3 to a brilliant win in the Avlesbury Handicap. His success was well earned after a close second to Fair Catch in the Cashmere Plate a week earlier. He started from the inside barrier position, was about eight places back at the half mile, but spurted to the from outside the furlong, and had the race won in a few powerful strides. Jimmy Hill, the second favourite, finished brilliantly very wide on the track for second. He was close behind the leading bunch after a ‘‘urlone. but was much further away from the leading bunch on the home turn, and it was late When his solid run brought him into the picture Jimmy Hill got up to beat Rustic by a head for second. Rustic had her chance; being in a trailing position from the start. She had the measure of the leaders. Hunting Melody and Struan, early in the run home, but Count Pierre quickly mastered her. Sea Fox, which followed Rustic on the inside from the half mile to the furlong, was fourth, a length back. Then there was a length and a half to Sajalite, which made his run from the ruck towards the middle of the track. Hunted, which led momentarily after the start, but then went back a few places, was a fair sixth, alongside Fair Catch. Next were Garrob. Tickled Pink, and Rhythm Rein. Orderly was squeezed back early and Scoutlore was slow away f"on> one of the wide barrier ~ Iroquoi Successful Iroquoi outfinished the top-wei&hts. iroquoi was on the inner, about three places back, till close to home, where R. J. Skelton steered her wider out on the track to give chase after the leaders. She ranged up alongside El Jefe. Search Warrant. Pleasant Ways, and Mexico nearing the furlong, and had the strongest finish.

Search Warrant beat El Jefe by-three-quarters of a length for second. Parasol finished brilliantly for fourth, two lengths back. She was slow away, and was a long 1 way from the lead coming to the straight. Parasol shaded Medbury for fourth and Mexico was close up sixth; Spiloch, the slowest beginner, was seventh, and next were Massalia, Pleasant Ways, Fahoud. Tombola, Royal Avon, Prince Delaware, Timely Boy, Awatere. Roy>al Valley, and Rhythmreel. Nehru Wins Decisively The win favourite, Nehru, cleared hack class with a decisive win for his Riccarton owners, Mr and Mrs H. C. Kidd, in the Redcliffs Handicap

The six-year-old Hiawatha gelding took a gap quickly outside the furlong, followed Kdlp into the last furlong, and won going away by a length and a half. Kelp lasted to beat the faster-finishing Lady Vivienne by a head for second. Nehru had seven horses ahead of him at the end of a furlong and followed Instanter, Kelp, Riverwood, Globemaster, and Packwood round the home turn.

Instanter dropped out quickly well outside the furlong, and Kelp was immediately challenged by Nehru, which drew away near the end to win soundly by a length and a half. Kelp barely managed to save second place from the faster-finishing Lady Vivienne, which was near the tail of the field after a furlong, and was still a long way back coming to the straight. Packwood was only a nose back, fourth, but he had his chance. He had the run of the race on the inner most of the way.

Kaseno, seventh on the home turn, was close up, fifth, and was followed home by Pickard, Old Monty, Riverwood. Masai, Instanter, Fern, Globemaster, Arc Flight. Rose of Kildare, Nugget, and Steadfast. Steadfast and Fern were the last away.
