CRASH NEAR BENGHAZI
35 Killed In Airliner (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, August 10 Thirty-five persons were killed and eight injured when a Central African Airways Viscount turboprop crashed near Benghazi yesterday. The 35 killed included 27 adult passengers, four children and four members of the crew. Four children were among the surviviors. The airline announced yesterday that 20 had survived the crash. The crash occurred early yesterday in the hills six miles from Benina Airport as the airliner was coming in to land. It was the same aircraft that carried the Queen Mother on her tour of the Central African Federation in July last year. Mr A. E. P. Robinson, chairman of Central African Airways, said the Viscount was carrying 47 passengers and a crew of seven, including two air hostesses. A rescue party had gone to the scene of the crash, but more details were not immediately available.
He said that the company was taking immediate steps for survivors who were fit to travel to be transported to London as soon as possible. The Viscount, one of the 700 series, was flying from Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia, to London. The cause of the crash is not known.
Among the survivors was Sir Savage, aged 53, a former Governor of British Guiana, and Lady Savage. Sir Alfred Savage served as Deputy Treasurer in Fiji in 1935. British Overseas Airways later today issued a list of 20 survivors —including four babies—but would not say whether it was complete.
