EXPLOSION IN BEIRUT

Blast Wrecks Cafe (Rec. 11 p.m.) BEIRUT, August 8. A heavy explosion rocked the heart of Beirut today, killing at least two persons, with three others missing, security forces reported. The explosion wrecked the colourful Cafe Azar, in the Place de Canon, according to the American Associated Press. It was the second serious outrage since the President-elect (General Chehab) was elected on July 31. The manager of the Cafe Azar staggered into the street after the blgst, his face dead white with plaster particles and shock. “I saw two of my customers have their heads blown off—it was a sickening sight." he said. The explosion shattered windows in shops throughout the square. There was no way of determining whether it marked a return to violence in Lebanon or whether it was merely an isolated incident.
