Dulles Criticises Khrushchev
(Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 7
President Eisenhower conferred with, the Secretary of State (Mr Dulles) today to chart new strategy for countering the expected Soviet denunciation at the emergency United Nations General Assembly meeting.
Minutes after 'Mr Dulles re-, turned from a flying visit to Brazil, he conferred with Mr Eisenhower as part of a broad review of Middle East policy. The White House gave no details about their 30-minute meeting, but the Press Secretary, Mr James Hagerty, said it covered other topics as well as Mr Dulles’s three-day Brazilian visit. At the airport, Mr Dulles assailed what he called the erratic course followed by the Soviet Prime Minister (Mr Khrushchev) in first accepting, then rejecting a summit conference.
The Secretary of State brushed aside questions about whether he and Mr Eisenhower would attend the United Nations meeting. Mr Eisenhower was reported to be seriously considering appearing to outline an approach to easing Middle East tensions.
“I left here having in mind that Mr Khrushchev had accepted a high-level meeting at the Security Council,” Mr Dulles said. . ‘‘Now he apparently thinks the Security Council is so terrible he couldn’t possibly attend.”
