KHRUSHCHEV’S ATTENDANCE
“No Clearance Request”
(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 7. The White House today denied a report that the Soviet. Prime Minister (Mr Khrushchev) had requested through diplomatic channels that; he be cleared for unrestricted travel in the United States. The report was published by the New York “Daily News," which also said that Mr Khrushchev “plans a surprise flight to New York” to lead the Soviet delegation at the special United Nations General Assembly meeting on the Middle East. Concerning the unrestricted travel clearance for Mr Khrushchev, the White House Press Secretary (Mr James Jlagerty) said: “No such request has been presented ... in any form, shape, or manner.”
On the possibility that the Soviet Prime Minister might attend the General Assembly session, Mr Hagerty emphasised that that was not a matter for the United States Government.
“Anybody can go to the General Assembly and represent their Government,” Mr Hagerty said. “That is entirely up to them and nobody else.”
Mr Hagerty was also questioned about the possibility of President Eisenhower going to the General Assembly. The President told his
press conference yesterday' that he had no plans to attend, but he added that he would attend if he found it necessary or desirable. Mr Hagerty said that advance notification would be given if the President decided to go to the United Nations meeting. Replying to a question, Mr Hagerty said he did not know whether the President would reply to the latest letter from Mr Khrushchev.
