EARLIER FIRES AT HANMER
Yesterday’s fire was not the first one of its kind at Hanmer Springs. The sanatorium building constructed by the Government in 1897 was burned to the ground by a fire which broke out at 4 o’clock on the morning of August 4, 1914. It was built on a section of 10 acres adjoining the hot springs enclosure. It had been added to from time to time and, in addition to staff quarters, provided accommodation for 18 patients. The Jollie’s Pass Hotel, of which the first proprietor of the original Lodge had been owner, was burned down on October 22, 1927. With that fire the Hanmer district lost its only liquor licence The nearest licensed hotel was then at Culverden until the new Lodge was granted a tourist licence and. in 1953, a full licence
