FOUNDATIONS OF GLASS

Block Of Flats In Kiev MOSCOW. A few years ago the ground on which the Odessa Opera House stood began to subside. To save it—one of the world’s best theatrical buildings—it was decided to pump liquid glass under the foundations. This incident prompted scientists and builders to think whether it would be possible to K build houses on loose ground—sand, for instance—by using liquid glass as a binding agent. But liquid glass is difficult to manufacture and ratner costly. So the first task was to make it-cheaper. After prolonged research and experiment Ukrainian scientists developed a new technology tor the production of liquid glass. One of the Kiev plants used this technology to produce liquid glass from ordinary Dnieper sand. It cost only half as much as glass produced by the old method. ' Kiev building workers started making foundation blocks from local sands, using liquid glass asthe binding agent. On this “glass” foundation a five-storey block of flats is now being built in Kiev. Building on glass here will cheapen construction considerably.
