Western Samoa

Sir,—Mr Nash seems well pleased with the state of Samoa, but is it really so good? * 1 hear of the sacking of all P.W.D. employees in Savai'i, 250 In Upolu, more than a third of teachers in Government schools, and more Government employees tn go. Postages, duties, hospital charges —indeed, all Government charges —were expected (in March) to rise. There was a probability of Public Service salaries being cut at least 10 per cent and annual increments withheld. Space does not allow of my discussing the causes of the trouble, but they have long been obvious .to persons outside the administration. On what does the Government base its rosy views?—Yours, etc., FA’A SAMOA. May 8, 1958. [This letter was referred to the Island Territories Department but no reply has been received.]
