Opawa Shopping Centre
Sir.—l would like to ask why-in a definite shopping area land has been set aside as residential sites only. Opposite the new Opawa Post Office and the library and at the Opawa bus stop the old technical hostel is, I understand, shortly to be modernised. This area is well overdue for mbre shops and no other land is available, except a section next to the Post Office. Often you hear people say, “Well, I cannot get what I want here; I will have to go to town for it” By the way this is an approach to the city from Heathcote. Horotane and Avoca Valley. What will it be like when the tunnel road opens?—Yours, etc., PROGRESS. June t, 1958. . [The Christchurch City Engineer (Mr E. Somers) said: rilf the correspondent calls and inspects the plans at the town planning office, he will (see that the area set aside lor Commercial purposes in Opawa road, in the vicinity of Hawford' road, will permit at least doubling the number of shops already existing.”]
