FUMIGATION PLANT
Noxious Gases Feared The Riccarton Borough Council has lodged an official protest against a fumigation station proposed by the Government. The site for the station, which the Department of Agriculture was to build, is a vacant piece of land in Kyle street beside the dehydration works. “The council objects or. the ground of possible danger and obnoxiousness, and it strongly objects to the erection of the plant in the area which is bordered closely by domestic properties,’’ the Town Clerk (Mr R. Sarjeant) has told the Ministry of Works. Mr Sargeant said yesterday that it would no doubt be claimed that there would be little or no noxious discharge from the station but gases used in processing were lethal and could be fatal if they were allowed to escape. Mr Sargjeant said that the council was not so concerned about statements concerning lack of immediate deleterious effects from purified gases allowed to escape from the station after use; but it did want to avoid the Hornby complaints of peeling paint and arid garden soil after the chemicals had been escaping over a long period. A reply to the council’s objections to the station has been received from the Department of Agriculture. It will be considered at the next meeting of the council on June 30. V-
