NEW LIGHTING PLAN FOR RICCARTON ROAD

High intensity lighting to make a mile am! a half of Riccarton road as bright as day by night is planned. The stretch to be illuminated lies between Deans avenue and Clyde road. The project will he a combination of local body development and private business enterprise.

The object of the scheme is to give the Riccarton shopping area the "big city’’ look. Businesses banded together want to make Riccarton’s retail trade relationship to Christchurch’s centre the same as Newmarket’s to the Queen street-Karangahape road area. The street lighting scheme has been organised by the Riccarton Borough Council. It will be fluorescent and much more powerful than the present lighting. Tenders have been called and submission of them to the council for consideration is awaited. An early start is expected. The other part of the project will be new lighting under the

verandas of shops in Riccarton road. The Riccarton Businessmen’s Association has asked shopkeepers for their opinions on the proposal. Only as many shops as are prepared to join the scheme will have the lighting but it is hoped that all businesses in the full-frontaged shopping blocks will participate.
